HYDERABAD: An interstate arrest of cyber criminals involved in a 72 lakh investment fraud took an unexpected turn when one of the offenders escaped from police custody at Telangana Bhavan in New Delhi earlier this week.
The panicked police team then lodged a complaint with Tilak Marg police in New Delhi and, with their assistance, managed to locate the offender two days later.

The accused was brought back to the city on Thursday and placed in judicial remand. On December 1, 2024, a 55-year-old software developer from SR Nagar lodged a complaint with Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police, stating that cyber fraudsters had duped him of 72.4 lakh over a period of 50 days between September 24 and November 4, 2024.
Promised profits
They had promised him significant profits through stock market investments via a mobile application they provided.
During the investigation, a team led by inspector S Naresh travelled to Delhi in the third week of April 2025 and arrested two offenders — Md Umair, 23, a food delivery executive from Jamia Nagar, and Intizar Ahmad, 23, a student from Shaheen Bagh, Delhi — on April 19. The duo were produced before a local court in Saket on April 20, and a four-day prisoner transit remand was obtained to bring them to Hyderabad.
"We were informed that due to the unavailability of train tickets for the same day, the police team stayed in room 304 of Telangana Bhavan with the two accused, during which one of them managed to escape," said an official from Telangana Bhavan.
The panicked police then searched for Umair in the surrounding areas and at his residence. After failing to locate him, they lodged a complaint with Tilak Marg Police.
"At 1am on April 21, Md Umair woke up to attend nature's call. When the escort constables took him to the toilet, he pushed them aside, removed his handcuffs, jumped out of the toilet window, and escaped from Telangana Bhavan. A police constable stationed at the main gate witnessed the incident and attempted to stop him, but the accused fled swiftly," inspector S Naresh stated in his complaint to Tilak Marg Police.
Following the complaint, Tilak Marg police registered a case under section 262 (Resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of BNS on April 21.
Joint operation held
"In a joint operation, our team and the Hyderabad Police apprehended the absconding accused within two days of his escape from Jamia Nagar," said a Tilak Marg Police official. DCP Cyber Crime D Kavitha confirmed that both accused were brought to Hyderabad on Thursday.
"Umair had supplied bank accounts to cyber fraudsters, while Intizar provided his own bank account. Both are currently in judicial remand," the DCP said.
